The University welcomes applications from suitably qualified candidates of any age. English Law defines those under the age of 18 as minors and the universities have implied enhanced duty of care to any of its students who have not yet attained their legal majority. The University cannot act in loco parentis and will therefore not act in a parental capacity to any Young Person. A completed and signed consent form from a parent/guardian will be required by the University, countersigned by the appointed Guardian, before a Young Person can register with the University and commence his/her studies. It is essential that the University has up to date contact information for a person based in the UK who is able to act in loco parentis in the event of an emergency. This person is referred to as the Guardian on the Consent form that parents/Guardians of Under 18 year old students must complete before a Young Person can commence their studies The University will provide contact details of recognised guardianship agencies. Details can be found at www.aegisuk.net. Whilst the University does not recommend any particular agency, the following agencies, whose details are on the website have expressed an interest in working with university students: Bright world Guardianship Ltd Clarendon International Education Guardians International Students International Ltd Sutherland Education The University policy is to treat Young Persons as much as possible in the same way it treats all other students. In order to fulfil its duty of care responsibilities the University will issue to Young Persons identity (ID) cards that are slightly different to the normal ID cards to ensure that these students are easily identifiable. ID cards are checked on a number of occasions, for example when making purchases from the Student Union shops. A new ID card will be issued once the student becomes 18 years of age. Young Persons will be subject to the Universitys normal rules and regulations and will be able to access the majority of the campus facilities and opportunities offered in the same way as all other students. University Halls of Residence are not designed to meet the required residential standards for children. Therefore students under the age of 16 will not be allocated places in University accommodation. Residential Allocations will endeavour to ensure that all 16-17 year olds will be allocated an on-campus single room. Students under the age of 18 are unable to enter into an accommodation Licence Agreement with the University. Therefore a parent/guardian or other responsible person must act as guarantor and sign the Licence Agreement with the University. The signed Licence Agreement must be received by Residential Allocations before the student can take up residence. The Housing Services Code of Conduct will apply to all students, including Young Persons. Heads of Strategic Business Units will identify members of staff and groups of students that need to undergo Criminal Records Bureau checks ensure that the necessary arrangements are made for this to be done and that the required checks have been completed. Young Persons will be required to allow the University to share data about their age with those people in the University that need to know this information. It is most likely that all these staff will be over eighteen years. All admission decisions will be made in accordance with the relevant admissions policy (UPR SAO3/UPRSA02).Young Persons will not be recruited to courses that require licence to practice if the relevant Professional Body imposes any age restrictions Young Persons will not be permitted access to certain areas of the University that restrict access by age. Students aged under 18 are entitled to membership of the Students Union, but will not be granted access to events where entry is restricted to students who are 18 years of age or over. A full version of the Universitys policy and regulation relating to children, young people and vulnerable adults is available from the Universitys Safeguarding Officer.
