Counselling

Emotional and psychological issues can get in the way of enjoying your university experience. The counselling service offers short term face to face counselling and same-day bookable appointments. On occasions where local services are limited, we offer video counselling to distant learners.

What we can help you with

You can talk to the University's counselling service about many different problems which you may face at University in your academic and personal life. Our qualified and experienced counsellors understand the pressures of university life and offer a non-judgemental ear.

We regularly hear a range of issues including:

alcohol-related issues
anxiety or depression
bereavement
difficulties with relationships
eating problems
self-harm or suicidal thoughts
sexuality, sexual orientation, and gender identity
study-related issues such as poor concentration and fear of failure.

Report and Support

If you witness an incident or are worried about someone else, please inform the Office of the Dean of Students.

How we can help you

There are a number of ways which we can help you from traditional face-to-face sessions to online counselling (via zoom) and WhatsUpp support groups. A few of our methods are listed below:

short-term psychotherapy and counselling
hypnotherapy
eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
art therapy
group therapy
information about specialist services
referral to other services
self-help resources - in Student Wellbeing Reception and on StudyNet
workshops (e.g. exam preparation success, procrastination, managing mood).

We abide by the British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy's 'Ethical Framework for the Counselling Professions'. Our counselling team comprises of fully trained and accredited counsellors and psychotherapists. We also have trainee counsellors who are working towards their qualification.
