Spatial cognition and language

Ioanna Markostamou has led research into the ability to communicate spatial information, such as where an object is located in the natural environment, and how it is vital for numerous everyday activities. Using novel experimental tasks, this work explores a wide range of complex forms of spatial cognition and communication.

For example:

  • Visuospatial perspective-taking in social and non-social contexts
  • Naming static and dynamic spatial relations
  • Memory for route-based and survey-based spatial descriptions.

Of particular interest is how these functions change over the lifespan, in typical ageing, and in neurological disorders such as dementia.
