Taster Lectures: aerospace engineering

Watch our taster lectures to gain an insight into what it's like to study aerospace engineering at university.

How aircraft became weapons

The Wright brothers made their first 12 second flight in a wooden aircraft in 1903. Yet by 1912, aircraft was used routinely by military forces around the world. Today it is inconceivable that we wouldn't use aircraft in war. So just how was the aircraft industry weaponised? In this talk we'll discuss the politics involved, the pace of development and the technological innovations along the way.

About the speaker

Dr Rachel Cunliffe is a senior lecturer and Head of the Aerospace Group at the 91¿´Æ¬.

Coming in to land - Airfield Operations

Have you pictured yourself bringing a plane into land? Pilots need to know how an airfield is laid out and how to fly into an airfield, even if it's one they haven’t visited before. This lecture covers the various parts of an airfield and the ‘circuit’ that surrounds it. Plus, we share the key principles of flying.

About the speaker

Ray Wilkinson is a principle lecturer within the School of Physics, Engineering and Computer Science. He spent 11 years working in the industry, predominantly working on missile systems, before joining us at Herts. Ray is a qualified amateur pilot and teaches on our aerospace engineering degrees.

Space Vehicles

Space travel is a relatively dangerous activity. In this talk we discuss how we are meeting the challenges of exploring space. We'll introduce you to space vehicles and satellites, orbits, types of vehicle and propulsion systems.
