The 91¿´Æ¬ Performance Sport Programme has an excellent Sport Scholarship Scheme which provides an extensive range of support services to our elite and talented athletes studying at the University.

All applications to the Sports Scholarship Scheme are considered on an individual basis and will vary between athletes and sports. Priority will be given to our current BUCS Performance Sports – Women’s Football, Men’s & Women’s Futsal, Men’s Basketball, Netball and American Football. Athletes from other team and/or individual sports will be considered on a case-by-case basis but should be representing their sport at a national age group level or above (or an equivalent level where player pathways may differ from sport to sport).

There are a range of benefits available for student-athletes who may receive some or all the following support services:

Following confirmation of a successful sports scholarship award, the Performance Sport and Scholarships Manager will create a sports scholarship agreement with the student-athlete which details exactly the services and support available.

• have a household income of £30,000 or less as assessed by Student Finance England or other relevant awarding body. • awarded every year to three first year students studying Adult Nursing. Students eligible are those full-time Home students with a household income below £40,000 p.a. at commencement of their first year of study

Students are eligible to apply if they are care-leavers or care-experienced students aged 18-24

• awarded on completion of the previous scholar to two first year full time Health and Social Work student with a declared disability, who is returning to study after a minimum break of three years from formal education
• to apply: students will be asked to fill out a short application form which will include questions focussed on demonstrating that the student is making a valuable contribution to society through volunteering and community work; demonstrating that their study is being undertaken to improve their employment prospects; and demonstration of a good record of academic ability and attendance since starting University. Applications will be shortlisted by the donor, and shortlisted candidates will be invited to an informal interview with the donor and a member of the University’s academic staff to complete the selection

• value: payment of tuition fees for up to three years.
• The bursary is open to applicants for the BSc (Hons) Therapeutic Radiotheraphy course, for whom the course will be a second degree; or who are working as support workers in radiotherapy or cancer services; or who has worked in social care and has volunteered or raised funds for a cancer charity/healthcare provider; or who was in social care at any point during childhood and has volunteered or raised funds for a cancer charity/healthcare provider.

• Applicants should have the right to work in the UK and be resident in England.
• Applicants should not be receiving a student loan or other sponsorship to cover the course fees for the programme for which they plan to enrol or have enrolled.

• awarded every year to support two undergraduate law students on the Student Success Programme in their first year of academic study. The scholarship is awarded on merit, but is designed to attract those whose background would give them little acquaintance with university or legal life. This is determined by a short written submission and interview. The application and selection process are not time consuming. All eligible students are encouraged to apply and help with the application process will be given

• awarded every year to a full time undergraduate student on the LLB Law degree
• to apply: the scholarship candidates will be chosen from the top performers on the second year Property Law module. Shortlisted candidates will be called to an interview.

• The bursary is open to students on the MOptom Master of Optometry course. The bursary scheme is competitive within the UK, and not everyone who applies will receive a bursary. Please read the information and guidance notes on the Company's website carefully before applying.   Applicants can be of any nationality, but they must be registered to study within the UK, must be eligible to work in the UK and must hold a UK bank account.

• To apply: use the online form on the Company's website only. The deadline for applications is usually in December. Late applications and applications not made by the online form will not be accepted.

This scholarship is to the value of a 20% tuition fee reduction. It's awarded to 91¿´Æ¬ undergraduate students who return to study for any postgraduate taught course and research degree at Herts. No application is required, the scholarship will be automatically awarded if you are eligible and your tuition fee will be reduced accordingly.

Terms, conditions and eligibility criteria

The 91¿´Æ¬ Graduate Scholarship is available to self-funded 91¿´Æ¬ graduates* (UK/EU and international) for their first full year of full-time or all years of part-time (UK/EU only) postgraduate or research degrees at the University.

The Graduate Scholarship is available to students who have:

• graduated from a 91¿´Æ¬ undergraduate degree (either studied in the UK or at a partner institution overseas) and are starting a new postgraduate taught course at the University.

Or

• graduated from a 91¿´Æ¬ undergraduate or postgraduate degree (either studied in the UK or at a partner institution overseas) and are starting a new research degree (PhD) course at the University.

Or

• completed the Study Abroad programme with us from a different institution.

The value of the Graduate Scholarship will be a fee deduction equivalent to 20% of the tuition fee due for the first year of full-time postgraduate study and (for UK/EU students only) 20% of the fee due for all years of part-time postgraduate or doctoral study. However in all instances, the Graduate Scholarship is not applicable to tuition fees due for repeating modules.

The Graduate Scholarship is available for a range of postgraduate taught programmes offered by the University. These include Masters awards, those at Postgraduate Certificate or Postgraduate Diploma level (but excluding the Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE), the Certificate in Professional Studies, some vocational or professional practice certificates and short courses). The graduate scholarship is not available for MSc Global Business or any postgraduate courses funded via the undergraduate student SFE loans being; MSc Nursing (Adult, Child, Learning Disabilities & Mental Health), Master of Midwifery (Shortened), School Direct (unsalaried), MArch Architecture and Urbanism.

If the eligibility criteria are met, this scholarship will be awarded to a 91¿´Æ¬ undergraduate for the first postgraduate or doctoral programme of study undertaken only. (Doctoral eligible only from 18/19 past study). If subsequent postgraduate or doctoral programmes are undertaken they will be charged at full price.

Graduates must:

a) have been offered and accepted a place on a full-time or part-time (UK/EU only) award-bearing 91¿´Æ¬ programme

and

b) be paying the full cost of the tuition fee from their own resources directly to the 91¿´Æ¬, and not discounted or sponsored for any part of the fee by the 91¿´Æ¬ or an organisation such as an employer, charitable body or government department. International Students who are successfully awarded the Herts Graduate Scholarship are still eligible for the £500 tuition fee discount if they pay in full at registration.

International Students will only be able to claim either Herts Graduate Scholarship OR the International Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship.

Candidates will be required to meet all conditions of registration before the Scholarship is awarded.

*A 91¿´Æ¬ graduate is defined as anyone who has graduated from an undergraduate programme of study (at any time and in any location) and holds an award either of the 91¿´Æ¬ or of the former Council for National Academic Awards (for a CNAA first degree or other CNAA award) obtained at the former Hatfield Polytechnic or one of its predecessor institutions.

The 91¿´Æ¬ Performance Sport Programme has an excellent Sport Scholarship Scheme which provides an extensive range of support services to our elite and talented athletes studying at the University.

All applications to the Sports Scholarship Scheme are considered on an individual basis and will vary between athletes and sports. Priority will be given to our current BUCS Performance Sports – Women’s Football, Men’s & Women’s Futsal, Men’s Basketball, Netball and American Football. Athletes from other team and/or individual sports will be considered on a case-by-case basis but should be representing their sport at a national age group level or above (or an equivalent level where player pathways may differ from sport to sport).

There are a range of benefits available for student-athletes who may receive some or all the following support services:

• strength and conditioning from industry leading coaches at 
• athlete education workshops covering topics such as nutrition, sport psychology, anti-doping, etc.

• lifestyle support from a TALS qualified practitioner to help with an athlete’s development and ability to balance sport alongside degree studies.

Following confirmation of a successful sports scholarship award, the Performance Sport and Scholarships Manager will create a sports scholarship agreement with the student-athlete which details exactly the services and support available.

• awarded every year to one student studying for the online MA Literature & Culture. Open to all first year UK and EU students, both full-time & part-time
• to apply: a panel of academic staff within the School of Humanities will select the most deserving recipient based on an application form. The application will include a question about how they will benefit from the scholarship funding.

Funding is available to help you . You can apply for a:

• tuition fee loan of up to £9,535 to cover your teacher training, so you do not need to pay course fees upfront
• maintenance loan of up to £12,382 to help with living costs.

You can still apply for a tuition fee and a maintenance loan if you already have a student loan, and regardless of whether you get a teaching bursary or scholarship.

You will only have to make loan repayments once you’re earning. Your repayments will not increase if you already have a student loan and take an additional loan for teacher training.

Bursaries and scholarships are available to trainees on tuition fee-based teacher training courses in England that lead to the award of Qualified Teacher Status.

For 2023 to 2024, the government is offering bursaries of:

• £27,000 in chemistry, computing, mathematics and physics
• £25,000 in geography and languages (including ancient languages)
• £20,000 in biology and design and technology
• £15,000 in English
• Scholarships are offered in the following areas:
• £29,000 in chemistry, computing, mathematics and physics
• £27,000 in French, German and Spanish (no other languages)

• value: full first year fee waiver
• this scholarship is one of eight awarded to home students on selected postgraduate courses who demonstrate active engagement in British Muslim Communities and long-term commitment to community/societal development. Eligible courses in this school are:
  • MSc Outdoor Environmental Education
• to apply: applications for the masters course are made to the University by the normal process and places offered following the normal admissions procedure. . Acceptance for the scholarship does not signify a guaranteed place at the University, and vice versa.

A scholarship of £750 is available each year to a student on the doctoral or masters’ programmes in the School of Education.

To apply: eligible students will be invited by the School of Education to complete an application form in the first year of their programme.

• awarded to a student studying full time on the Masters by Research in Astrophysics programme
• to apply: students will be invited to apply during semester A of their first year and the winning recipient will be chosen by an academic panel.

• value: £750 (paid in the first year of study)
• awarded every year to one student studying in the Department of Computer Science. Open to all first year UK postgraduate students, both full-time and part-time
• to apply: a panel of academic staff within the School of Physics, Engineering and Computer Science will select the most deserving recipient based on an application form. The application will include a question about how they will benefit from the scholarship funding. Marks achieved during Semester A of the first year will also be taken into consideration.
