Luke Dewe
Meet Luke. Even though Luke found academic study tough, Herts gave him an opportunity to study for a bachelor’s degree after an interview with the admissions team. He went on to graduate with first-class honours and is now working as a Physiotherapist in the NHS.

Inspired to succeed
Luke was a Physiotherapy Assistant in the NHS when he decided to study at Herts. He was inspired by the physiotherapists he worked with, who in Luke’s words, ‘set a good example and encouraged me to be as knowledgeable as they are.’
Luke was ambitious but had struggled academically. He was invited to an interview by the 91¿´Æ¬’s admissions team, who saw that Luke was capable and determined to succeed. Three years later, he would graduate with first-class honours.
His favourite memories
One of Luke’s favourite memories from his time at Herts was going on placement with his coursemates. He says, ‘Herts offers a wide variety of placements, and these experiences allowed me to gain knowledge from multiple departments and other disciplines. Going on placement with coursemates makes you feel more supported, and we would often have a good laugh together after a hard day at work.’
Since graduating, Luke has volunteered as a Physiotherapist in a Tanzanian hospital. Luke describes this experience as ‘eye-opening’. He adds, ‘On the first day, we were given a hospital tour. Women in the labour ward didn’t get pain relief because of the price of painkillers, and they were pretty much left to deliver their babies on their own.’
Next steps
Luke is now working for the Hertfordshire Community NHS Trust in their Stevenage Integrated Community Team, and he will soon rotate to their Musculoskeletal Outpatients service for eight months.
