Monitoring Climate and its' Impact (MCI)

A climate change monitoring system integrates satellite observations, ground-based data and forecast models to monitoring and forecast changes in the climate. Long-term monitoring of actual climate change is necessary to better understand the effects of climate change and its impact as well as to access future conditions in a more accurate manner at the local, regional, national and global level. This has become particularly important in the context of climate change, as climate variability increases and historical patter shift. To achieve this purpose, the Monitoring Climate and its' Impact (MCI) research group sets out the following general aims:

  1. to analyse and quantify how changes in the climate and its impact on various sectors such as agricultural, water, environmental, building, refrigeration and air conditioning
  2. to establish a data-driven decision making process based on climate change data for long-term monitoring of actual climate change impacts to better understand the effects of climate change on various sectors
  3. to improve our understanding of the underlying processes in order to ensure the long-term success of climate adaptation initiatives, plans and actions.

Research themes

The Group aims to address:

  • identification and prioritisation of technologies (i.e. agricultural, urban transportation, waste management) to address climate change impacts
  • data, knowledge management and innovation for climate action
  • to develop machine learning (ML) and statistical algorithms to improve the climate forecasting models and modelling potential impacts of future climate change.
