Technical Staff

Our technical staff work across the University, in our academic Schools and our professional departments, providing crucial support and assistance to our staff and students.

They are experts in their areas, installing, configuring and maintaining our technical equipment and systems, and providing users with the skills and knowledge to use them effectively.

Through their skills, knowledge and expertise, our technical staff make a significant impact on learning and teaching, research, and the student and staff experience, and we’re committed to supporting and celebrating the vital role that they play here at Herts.

The Technician Commitment

The Technician Commitment is a sector-wide initiative that aims to ensure visibility, recognition, career development and sustainability for technicians working in higher education and research, across all disciplines. The 91¿´Æ¬ is a proud founding signatory, having joined the scheme in 2017, as part of our pledge to take action to tackle the key challenges affecting our technical staff.

Through the Commitment, the University aims to ensure that technical staff are supported through:

  • Visibility: raising the profile of individuals and teams, and of the work and contribution that technical staff make to the University
  • Recognition: championing opportunities for professional registration and external award schemes
  • Career development: providing opportunities to progress and develop, and offering fulfilling career pathways
  • Sustainability: embedding technical skills so they continue to thrive, so we continue to make the most of our technical expertise

As a result of our Technician Commitment action plan, we have already introduced a University wide communications platform for technical staff to interact with each other:

  • Café Tech: a time to get together to highlight the working areas of the different technical teams
  • New technical career progression pathways: to ensure that our technical staff are rewarded and retained for their technical skills and contributions

Technician Commitment Impact Award

The 91¿´Æ¬ has been awarded the Technician Commitment Impact Award on 19 November 2024, in recognition of its commitment to enhancing the visibility, recognition, career development, and sustainability of technical skills and roles. This recognition highlights our ongoing efforts to support and champion the vital contributions of our technical staff.
